Oh Sugar Bowl. This is a really great spot in the University area that we definitely under use.
We came in a Monday Night for a friend's birthday and were surprised that this place was hopping (and continued to be all night long). Maybe it was the awesome weather we were having but I also think the great atmosphere and drink selection is what keeps this place busy from open to close. It`s moderately sized, with a tiny but enjoyable patio, and a comfy dining room full of wood tables and chairs, and beautiful brick walls.
We started off the evening with some salted soy beans, and of course, beer! One of the specials of the evening was the De Koninick Pale Ale which was light but had an interesting zip to it (I am clearly better at describing food...). The beans were good, cooked but not mushy and just enough salt make it hard to stop eating them.
For the main I had their beef and cheddar burger. The burger was really juicy and came with nicely crisp fries and both their homemade ketcup (sweet but spicy - very different from regualr ketcup and therefore so much better) and a really great smoky chipotle aoili. I was really pleased, but did sneak a bite of Nick's Lamb burger which is a Sugarbowl staple - with it smothered in goat cheese how could it not be?!
This time we did pass on dessert, though Nick and I regret it and will be going back soon for their banana cream pie, which is killer. Thick gram cracker crust, delicious banana custard, whip cream and chunks of white chocolate - it's dessert heaven. I guess we were just too busy trying all of their beers (their extensive selection takes over the menu) that we forgot about it; having sips of a Raspberry Lindemans (great!) and grapefruit shandy (half beer half greatfruit juice - also great) was dessert in itself!
It hasn't been a week and I'm already ready to go back for more!
